Hey there !
So my name is Anthony Powles, and I’m also known under the nickname YoGiN, which has been following me since 1996, from the times I used to hang out in the demoscene crowd, although I can’t say I was very active in terms of producing anything. But I’ve met some great people then, and enjoyed all those demo parties across Europe.
Anyway, I’m a software engineer, and I’ve worked for several gaming studios for online games. I’ve also worked for the main social network website in The Netherlands, and I have recently joined the CouchSurfing dev team! I used to program under Linux in C, a long time ago, but as I’ve been involved into various projects since, I have moved out of system programming, and I would now consider myself as a web developer, working on high load websites, requiring high availability.
My main development language these days is PHP, but I also use HTML, CSS, and Javascript on a daily basis. My daily concerns go towards performance, scaling and distributed information.
Something else about me, I love travelling and especially backpacking ! When I was a kid, I went camping all over Europe with my parents, and as I grew up, I went my own way. I went around a quarter of Australia, but also most of Thailand, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. I also did smaller trips to Egypt and Canada. So far I have to say I love Asia, and especially Vietnam, where I’ve been several times, staying a month at a time. I just can’t get enough of it !
As I said earlier, I recently joined CouchSurfing dev team, and since we can work remotely, I have left Europe, and flew to Vietnam once more. I am planning to stay in Hanoi for a couple of months.
Ok, some last things about me, I love listening to hard rock, metal, punk and jazz. I actually listen to a lot more things but it’d be too long to write everything down. I’ve played the piano for 10 years, I tried picking up the guitar but didn’t really played that much in the end. I have a couple of didjeridoos I brought back from Australia, which I love playing when I get the time. I mostly read science fiction novels. And I love all the science fiction movies and tv series.
